Common Tax Filing Mistakes to Avoid
Common Tax Filing Mistakes to Avoid
Every year, millions of taxpayers in India file their Income Tax Returns (ITR) right before the July 31st deadline. In the rush to submit, many make simple errors like selecting the wrong ITR form, ignoring bank savings interest, or failing to verify their returns.
Making mistakes on your tax return can lead to defective return notices under Section 139(9), delayed tax refunds, or penalty demand notices from the Income Tax Department. Here are the 6 most common tax filing mistakes in India and how to avoid them.
Top 6 Tax Filing Mistakes in India
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
| COMMON TAX FILING MISTAKES |
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
| 1. Ignoring AIS (Annual Information Statement) Mismatch |
| 2. Not Declaring Savings Account & FD Interest Income |
| 3. Selecting the Wrong ITR Form (ITR-1 vs ITR-2 vs ITR-3) |
| 4. Failing to E-Verify the Return within 30 Days |
| 5. Not Reporting Job Changes / Multiple Form 16s |
| 6. Reporting Tax-Free Exempt Income as Taxable |
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
1. Ignoring AIS (Annual Information Statement) & Form 26AS
The Income Tax Department tracks all your financial activities digitally through AIS (Annual Information Statement) and TIS (Taxpayer Information Summary) accessible on the ITR portal.
- AIS logs your share trading sales, dividend payouts, mutual fund redemptions, interest income, and high-value credit card purchases.
- Mistake: Filing your ITR using only Form 16 without matching it against AIS. Any mismatch triggers an automated tax discrepancy notice!
2. Not Reporting Interest Income from Savings Accounts & FDs
Many taxpayers assume that because bank savings interest or FD interest is small, it doesn't need to be declared.
- The Rule: Interest from savings accounts and fixed deposits is taxable under "Income from Other Sources".
- Deduction Relief (Section 80TTA): You get a tax deduction of up to ₹10,000 per year on savings account interest (up to ₹50,000 under 80TTB for senior citizens). Declare the interest income first, then claim the 80TTA deduction.
3. Selecting the Wrong ITR Form
| ITR Form | Who Should Use It | Common Selection Mistake |
|---|---|---|
| ITR-1 (Sahaj) | Resident individuals with salary, 1 house property, income < ₹50L | Using ITR-1 when you sold stocks or mutual funds! |
| ITR-2 | Individuals with Capital Gains (Stocks/MFs/Property) or crypto | Skipping ITR-2 when holding foreign shares or crypto |
| ITR-3 | Individuals with income from Business or Profession (F&O trading) | Filing ITR-1 while doing active intraday / F&O trading |
If you sold stocks, mutual funds, or traded in F&O, you CANNOT file ITR-1. You must file ITR-2 or ITR-3.
4. Not E-Verifying Your ITR within 30 Days
Submit ITR Online ---> Must E-Verify within 30 Days (via Aadhaar OTP)

[ E-Verified Successfully ] [ Failed to E-Verify ]
-> Return Processed -> Return declared INVALID!
-> Tax Refund Disbursed -> Treated as Never Filed
Filing your return online is only Step 1. Your return is legally invalid until you e-Verify it using Aadhaar OTP or Net Banking within 30 days!
5. Not Reporting Multiple Form 16s During Job Changes
If you switched jobs during the financial year:
- Both employers might apply the basic exemption limit (₹2.5L / ₹3L) and standard deduction independently.
- The Result: When combined at year-end, your actual taxable income is higher, resulting in additional tax due. Always combine Form 16s from both employers when filing.
