Needs vs Wants: A Practical Guide
Needs vs Wants: A Practical Guide
One of the hardest parts of budgeting is being honest with ourselves. In a fast-paced consumer society, marketers are brilliant at making our wants feel like urgent needs.
Defining the Baseline
- Needs: Things required for basic survival and functioning in society (Food, Shelter, Basic Clothing, Healthcare, Work Transportation).
- Wants: Things that upgrade the quality of your life (Dining out, Designer clothes, OTT Subscriptions, Vacations).
The Grey Area
This is where most of our money drains.
- Food: Eating is a need. Ordering a ₹500 pizza on a Tuesday is a want.
- Clothing: A winter jacket is a need. A designer jacket costing ₹15,000 is a want.
- Transportation: Getting to the office is a need. Financing a luxury sedan instead of an affordable hatchback is a want.
A Framework for Spending
Before making a non-routine purchase, ask yourself:
- Can I delay this? Wait 48 hours. The impulse to buy a "want" often disappears.
- How many hours did I work for this? If you earn ₹500 an hour, is that ₹5000 smartwatch worth 10 hours of your labor?
Balancing wants and needs doesn’t mean living miserably—it just ensures that you spend intentionally on the wants that truly bring you joy.
