How to Build a Monthly Budget That Actually Works
How to Build a Monthly Budget That Actually Works
Most people hate the word "budget" because it sounds restrictive. But a good budget doesn't restrict your spending; it gives you permission to spend without guilt.
Here’s a practical, stress-free way to build one.
1. Determine Your In-Hand Income
Focus exclusively on what actually hits your bank account after TDS, PF deductions, and professional tax. This is your true starting point.
2. Note Down Fixed Expenses
List items that don't change much from month to month:
- Rent
- EMIs
- Broadband/Phone Bills
- Gym memberships or OTT subscriptions
3. Pay Yourself First
Before deciding how much you can spend on going out, immediately transfer your savings and investment amounts (like SIPs) directly to another account. Automate this step so you never "forget" to save.
4. Track Variable Expenses
What is left over is for groceries, dining, shopping, and fuel. Since these fluctuate, track them for a month using a notebook or an app to find an average.
5. Review and Adjust
At the end of the month, see where you overspent. Did Swiggy orders get out of hand? Adjust your categories for the next month. A budget is a living document—don’t be afraid to change it as your life changes.
