What a Rent Receipt Needs

Employers usually ask for rent receipts before accepting an HRA claim under the old tax regime. A receipt commonly shows the tenant and landlord names, the rented address, the rent amount and period, the payment mode, the date and the landlord's signature. Check your employer's exact requirements, since they decide what they accept.

  • Landlord PAN: employers generally require it when annual rent is above ₹1,00,000.
  • Cash payments: a revenue stamp is commonly expected on receipts for cash payments above ₹5,000. Bank or UPI payments leave a better record.
  • Keep proof: the rent agreement and bank or UPI statements support your claim if it is questioned.
  • New tax regime: HRA exemption is not available, so receipts are usually not needed.

Can I pay rent to my parents and claim HRA?
